secluded as they are inaccessible from land. Sailors have the privilege of
mooring for a swim and then lunch on board in total solitude.
Groups and experienced sailors may like to charter a yacht for an evening

Yachting Courses in Malta, Malta's sailing Schools & Yachting
Clubs
Malta's sailing schools providing a range sailing courses
from ‘taster’ weekends for first-timers to special courses for young sailors
and families as well as advanced yacht master qualifications and courses on
navigation. Apart from sailing schools, many clubs on the Islands run
courses open to non-members, usually in the summer. All school and club
trainers are expert, qualified sailors.
If you want to have some fun while on holiday on the water without much of
learning curve, why not hire a dinghy? These are available for hire at some
Malta's beaches and at most beachside or lido hotels with water sport
facilities. Qualified sailors can hire yachts from several bareboat Malta's
charter companies. If challenge and excitement are your thing, then Maltese
Waters offer some of the best in competitive and long-distance sailing. The
highlights of the sailing calendar are the two big races: Syracuse - Malta;
and the Rimini – Malta – Rimini Race. The best time for competitive sailing
in Malta is autumn through to mid- summer. Apart from the odd three-day
period of winter storms, the prevailing winds make for excellent sailing.
The Mistral (north-easterly) wind and the more humid, southerly Sirocco
provide the force you need to get under sail.
There is a full programme of races in Malta between April and November,
which are fun as competitor and spectator.
For more information on racing, contact the Royal Malta Yacht
Club on Manoel Island.
Malta is also becoming well established as an attractive
yachting centre. It is also a good base for winter berthing. The marinas
in Malta are sheltered from open seas and you can live on board in winter
months without discomfort. There are many spectacular bays and inlets where
you can anchor.
The Msida Marina, a creek off Grand Harbour, has around 274 berths and
berthing facilities on the Islands are in the process of being expanded. A
new marina is near Vittoriosa, the historic Three Cities area which has been
used since Phoenician times as a harbour. Further berths are also available
at the Portomaso
Hilton complex in the Paceville/St Julians area; and a small number of
berths are available at Mgarr Harbour, Gozo. There are excellent repair and
haulage facilities on Manoel Island where you can also store your boat on
dry land for maintenance during the winter.

If you are thinking of taking up sailing in Malta, or even
just want to hire a dinghy for a day, there are a few basic safety concerns
to bear in mind. Remember that the sea is unpredictable, even here where the
climate provides near perfect sailing conditions all year round. The
Maltese sailing schools and charter companies will provide you with all you
need to know to enjoy safe sailing, but we’ve listed the ten basic tips; all
common sense but it’s best to remind yourself.
Always carry adequate, and functioning, safety
equipment
Carry approved and suitable life jackets (flotation
devices)
Tell someone where you are going and don’t forget to
let them know when you’ve returned to shore
Know the rules and regulations
Watch the weather
Carry sufficient fuel and water
Guard against fire
Ensure your engine is reliable
Don’t overload your vessel
Don’t mix sailing with alcohol or drugs
