Getting around nearby By Public Transport - to Valletta City. A bus stop is about 2 to 5 minutes walk but car hire is recommended for proper exploration of the rest of the island. Use of public transport in this area is very good as there is a little terminus operating trips to Valletta on one side and to St. Julians and the northern part of Malta on the other side. From Valletta you can take another bus to any other town as buses radiate through Valletta all over the island. From the Strand at night there are atmospheric views of Valletta accross the water and its a popular place for the Maltese to stroll and chat along the promenade. The side streets into residential Sliema dont lead to any specific sights, but a meandering walk should throw up some of the fine villas built by the Maltese bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th Century.
The Tigne Headland offered the best point for guarding Marsamxett Harbour and Valletta, although the Knights of Malta did not build a fort there untill 1792. Other forts are dotted along the coastline and one of them is now the FRIDAYS Restaurant and Pizzeria on Tower Road. "The best feature is the wide promenade which hugs the shoreline for almost 5Km." - by Car Hire -Recommended if you want to get around more freely

Resort Information - Sliema Malta Location: 5 miles around the harbour W of Valletta and 8 miles from the airport.
Malta Telephone code from UK: 00356
Position: On the E coast, separated from Valletta by Marsamxett Harbour, Sliema forms a peninsula with sea on three sides.
General Description: A thriving, densely populated town, this is the largest and most upmarket residential and tourist area in Malta. On the Gzira side the cruise boats berth, and the harbour is a vibrant scene of commotion every morning as they leave, returning in the afternoon. In the evening there are beautiful views over to the floodlit bastions of Valletta. The other side of the wide peninsula boasts the elegant 2-mile seafront promenade, popular for evening strolls and people-watching in the true Mediterranean style. Tigne, at the point, is quieter and less heavily built up, with historic Fort Tigne at its tip. Ta'Xbiex is a quiet residential area with large, imposing villas and many embassies. All round, and particularly along the seafront, modern development has changed the face of Sliema as old buildings have been demolished to make way for multistorey modern hotels and apartments blocks. Parking is problematic and it's better to use buses rather than drive into central Sliema.
Market/Suitability: All ages will appreciate and enjoy Sliema. The area together with St. Julians is a prime resort for Malta and the most upmarket town on the Maltese islands.
Beaches: All along under the seafront promenade are wide, flat golden rocks, with access to the sea. A large restaurant and beach bar is sited half way along, and near it are large shallow rock pools ideal for children. Some hotels have private lidos, and here water sports are available to the public. For those who must have a sandy beach, there is a small strip where Sliema meets St. Julian's.
Shopping: Here are found the smartest shops and boutiques on the island, and these are mainly grouped together in a small area known as "The Ferries". Shop for jewellery, Italian shoes and international designer labels.
Entertainments: Daytime: water sports. Nightlife: bars, ballroom dancing, cinemas, nightclubs, and floorshows (in hotels).
Eating out: A wide choice, from burger bars to gourmet restaurants. Choose from French, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Russian, Turkish and vegetarian cuisine.
Public transport: Regular and frequent buses and a ferry service across the harbour to Valletta Internet Cafes: Here in Sliema you will find quite a few internet cafes mostly found in some coffee shops, and some restaurants. The Strand is a good place to find quite a few of them.
