PRESS RELEASE 22/07/2005

Due to the works which the Malta Maritime Authority will be doing on the new Passenger Terminal in Mgarr, the purchase of tickets will be transferred temporarily from Mgarr to Cirkewwa.

During the night of the 25th July 2005, the Automated Ticketing System will be transferred temporarily from Mgarr to Cirkewwa.

Thus, with effect from Tuesday, 26th July, both the purchase of tickets and their validation will be effected at Cirkewwa, whilst at the Mgarr end passengers and vehicles will only queue and board, without the need to have their tickets validated. Thus, embarkation from Mgarr should be far quicker, as both vehicles and passengers can proceed immediately to the vessel through the appropriate routes. At the Cirkewwa end, passengers and vehicles will need to purchase tickets and have them validated, in the same way as they do presently in Mgarr. The full procedure is explained hereunder.

Cirkewwa
Prior to entering the Marshalling Area, one has to be in possession of a valid ticket. Two new ticket booths for vehicles have been erected at the entrance to the Marshalling Area, whilst foot passengers, can purchase their tickets from within the new building housed close to the entrance of the passageway previously used by the foot passengers. The signs erected in the area will explain the directions clearly.

Although the point of sales will now be located at Cirkewwa, ticket selling at Mgarr will still be available for a limited number of hours in the morning on week days only from the marquee tent.

Mgarr
Due to the extensive works being undertaken, the holding capacity of the Marshalling Area at Mgarr will be substantially reduced. Thus we are expecting some queuing to automatically spill onto the road leading to the Port. As this access road is not very wide and must be open for traffic in both directions and access to the port areas, it is imperative that vehicles proceeding to board the ferry use the internal lane marked ‘Ferry Lane’. In order to maintain order, the police officers have been instructed to order drivers not on the ‘Ferry Lane’ to go back to that queue. Although queues at this end may seem longer, embarkation will be much faster because there will be no need for ticket validation in Mgarr. The public’s co-operation in this respect will be very much appreciated. Foot passengers will still have to pass through the marquee tent to board the vessel.

Sa Maison
Tickets for commuters wishing to use the Sa Maison service can be bought from any of the Company’s ticket booths (Cirkewwa or Mgarr), or from the Company’s offices at Sa Maison. The tickets will then be collected by the Master or his representative prior to embarkation on the vessel.

Gozo By Night

Due to the shift of the ticketing system to Malta, the Gozo By Night Scheme, which used to offer incentives for customers travelling to and returning from Gozo on the same evening, shall be discontinued for the time being until a logistical solution is found to re-start the scheme .

Gozo Channel officers will be doing their utmost to reduce any inconvenience that this change might cause. The Company is making a telephone line available so that customers can call in case they need further information. The number is 21556114.

Speaking about the proposed changes, Gozo Channel’s Chairman Mr Joseph Borg stated “Although the resumption of works at Mgarr will create a certain amount of disruption to the services of Gozo Channel Co Ltd, this is understandable given the extent of the project that is being undertaken. The company is in constant contact with the Malta Maritime Authority so that the works would affect the services rendered by Gozo Channel in the least possible manner. In the long run the completion of the terminals will substantially enhance the service the company gives to its clients.”
