Like all Mediterranean countries, Malta has plenty of cafes, catering for both locals and tourists. The typical Maltese cafe is a friendly and relaxed place where you can stop for a quick drink or linger over a leisurely meal. |
The Maltese are a sweet toothed nation and most cafes cafes have a range of pastries, cakes biscuits and other tempting snacks.
 Every cafe will serve tea (a legacy British rule) as well as coffee, and prices are very reasonable by European standards. Unlike most continental cafes, there is no price difference between standing at the bar for your drink or snack or sitting at a table inside or on the terrace. Coffee is variable ranging from tasteless instant varieties to the excellent Expresso.. Seaside cafes spring into life as soon as the tourists arrive, and for several months the
warm weather ensures a roaring trade of ice creams.

Quality of Service and tipping
In general the Maltese are renowned for their warmth and hospitality. However, as many waiters are part-time workers, they are often not trained and fail to realize the pleasure and job satisfaction that they can get from giving courtesy and service to others. Of coarse the example should come from the boss! . Thus when receiving a good service, it is up to you to leave a tip. Tipping is optional . In normal circumstances an additional 10% tip should be
added to the cost of a meal!

By European standards, eating out in Malta is very good value. You can travel in comfort and style for US$50-100 per day, a simple restaurant meal, a decent street-side snack and enough cold drinks to keep you going.
Banks are the best place to change money; they almost always offer a significantly better rate than any other establishment. Restaurants and taxis expect a 10% tip. All major credit cards are widely accepted. Bargaining for handicrafts at stalls or
markets is essential, but most shops have fixed prices. There's a 15% value-added tax on all consumer items.
Licensing Hours
Bars, restaurants and cafes are normally open between 9.00 a.m. and 1.00
a.m. and beyond. Alcohol may be bought up to 1.00 a.m. Most hotel bars
close at 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm, and some open after 6.00 p.m. Restaurants
are not generally open before 11.30 a.m. and between 3.00 pm and 7.00 pm.
Discos
Villas and Farmhouses are not in close proximity of Discos and nightlife.
However there are numerous lively discos, particularly in Malta ,St Paul's
Bay, Sliema , Paceville and St Georges areas. Several open-air discos
operate only in summer.
Casino- Dragonara (St. Julians, Malta) and Oracle Casino (Bugibba,
Malta)
American Roulette, Stud Poker, Punto Banco, Baccarat (chemin de fer), Slot
Machines & Black Jack and Roulette are played according to
international rules at the palatial Casino, St Julian's.
Beer
Maltese beer is excellent. Foreign beers are also available, but are more
expensive Recommended local beer: ask for "CISK", " Hopleaf " "Blue Label"
Wine
There is a wide variety of good Maltese wines at very reasonable prices.
Well known foreign wines are also available. Recommended local wine: Cabernet
Sauvignon by Marsovin.
